Following the bomb announcement that WWE has acquired Lucha Libre’s promotional AAA, the company announced that the next edition of Triplemania will be held at Arena Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on June 15th. Speaking about “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Dave Meltzer shared some details about his expectations for the event.
“They jacked the tickets, so people make them believe that the show has WWE talent,” Meltzer said. “We know that for obvious reasons, the AAA wants people like Pentagon, Phoenix, Rey Mysterio, Dominic Mysterio, those kinds of people. It’s not official that who’s there, who isn’t, and that there’s WWE talent in that show.”
Meltzer pointed to conviction among fans who WWE booked the show after purchasing AAA as a way to undercut AEW Grand Slam Mexico in Mexico City on June 18th.
“I’m not going to hurt the gate,” Meltzer continued. “It’ll be a national propaganda war, so it’s going to be very interesting. I think that’s a big deal.”
The newsletter writer believes WWE is trying to ensure that mainstream media coverage of wrestling doesn’t have an effect on them that week. With CMLL getting hot recently, Meltzer believes their involvement will help ensure that special episodes of “AEW Dynamite” move many tickets.
