Former Chicago defensive standout and Hall of Fame Steve “Mango” McMichael has been moved to Hospice Care as he continues his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). McMichael, 67, has been facing a steady decline in health since his 2021 diagnosis, including loss of mobility and speech, and has remained bedridden in recent years.

“As of today, Silver Cross Hospital in New Lennox is encouraging families to move Steve to a Joliet Hospice facility this afternoon,” Steve’s wife, Mysti McMichael, told Fox 32 Chicago. “He hasn’t responded in and out of the hospital for the past two weeks. He is currently in the ICU at Silver Cross.”

After his recent hospitalization, McMichael was placed in intensive care unit at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lennox. According to his wife, Misty McMichael, he has been unresponsive for the past two weeks. His medical team has recommended that Joliet move to a hospice facility, where he is taken away from his ventilator as part of the transition.

McMichael remains a respected figure in Chicago Sports history. With the Bears for over 13 seasons, he played in 191 consecutive regular season games, contributing to the team’s Super Bowl XX victory. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024, and the ceremony was held at home due to his health.

In addition to his football career, McMichael was also recognized for his time in professional wrestling and sports broadcasts. He is surrounded by a wide community of wife, daughter, and teammates and fans, providing ongoing support.
