Often, WWE’s biggest matches take place in the main event Wrestlemania Every year. It happened regularly throughout history, and recent editions were no exception to the rules. The goal of WWE is for the immortal showcase to have a happy ending that fans will remember forever.

However, WWE missed the mark on the outcome of Wrestlemania’s main event several times. “Mania became a two-night event in the 2020s, but WWE is taking away some of the pressure as it gets the heat on Saturday and delivers a happy ending on Sunday. Rome’s governance vs. Cody Rhodes – WWE Uncontroversial Universal Championship

WrestleMania 39 Night Two

As they say, timing is everything. The Bloodline story peaked after a tremendous match between Rome’s reign and Samizaine in the 2023 Elimination Chamber.

Don’t get wrong about that, the main event at WrestleMania 39 was absolutely fantastic until the finish. However, especially after the break-in of Flat Solo Sicore, Cody Rhodes loses killed the room. WWE made up for it next year, but it’s still not a blueprint for success.

Brockle Lesnar vs. Rome’s Reign – Title Unified Match, WWE & WWE Universal Championship

WrestleMania 38 Night Two

Brock Lesnar and the Rome rulers played countless matches in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Some were pretty good, but fans were tired after some terrible matches, including a boring clash in the main event at WrestleMania 34 and a steel cage match at the best Royal Rumble.

WWE again faced off at WrestleMania 38 in the title unified match between Lesnar’s WWE Championship and Reign’s universal title. The result was yet another boring match where governance won. Their chaotic last man standing match of Summerslam 2022 could have happened in the genius instead!

Lock and Rome rule vs. Cody Rhodes & Sethrolins

WrestleMania 40 Night One

As mentioned earlier, Cody Rhodes lost at WrestleMania 39. He won the Royal Rumble match for the second year in a row. He returned to WWE as a heel for the first time in nearly 20 years and wanted to face Roman reign instead. As a member of TKO’s board of directors, Locke had the power to do that.

However, fans still wanted to see Cody Rhodes win. At the end of the day, Cody won his title match – he should be, as he won the Rumble – but we were able to see rock wrestling. At WrestleMania on Saturday, the final boss worked with Reigns to face Rhodes and Seth Rollins. Heel picked up victory when Lock locked Rhodes. This meant that the main event next night would be contested under pedigree rules.

Cody Rhodes vs John Cena – WWE’s indisputable championship

WrestleMania 41 Night Two

Speaking of rocks, he was heavily influenced by major events at WrestleMania 41. John Cena shockedly turned the heels in the 2025 elimination chamber and sided along with the amazing ones. That makes sense, as she declared in January 2025 that she would “take a miracle” to win the Royal Rumble match, and knew she hadn’t won a TV singles match since April 2018! That despair motivated China to easily escape to win his record 17th WWE World Championship.

But then Cena simply ruled most of the mania match with Cody, who had been the WWE champion for a year, as he was still at Prime. Eventually, Rhodes hesitates to get revenge despite being previously unfairly treated, and is screwed again at the ending where he has no benefit from him. Needless to say, Rock was never seen again…this was very confused, and China’s 17th title victory won no justice in any form, form or form.

Rome’s Reign vs Edge vs Daniel Brian – WWE Universal Championship

WrestleMania 37 Night Two

After more than a year since fans were not attending the Thunderdome/Performance Centre during the pandemic, WWE fans finally witnessed WrestleMania 37 for two nights. In the main event of Second Night, the Roman rulers saw the Universal Championship with 2021 Royal Rumble winners Edge and Daniel Brian.

The three main stars were playing a very good match, and after stacking and pinning both Edge and Brian, the ruler won the dominant victory. This was early in the reign of the historic Universal Championship of Roman rule, and ultimately lasted for four years. There was no problem with Reigns’ victory, but Mania 37 deserved a happy ending in a year without fans.

Sasha Banks vs Bianca Bella – WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship

WrestleMania 37 Night One

A happier ending comes from the night before Royal Rumble winner Bianca Bel Air defeated Sasha Banks for the WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship. It was the second time that WrestleMania was made into an event for women’s matches after Mania 35.

Plus, it was their first time with two African-American performers main event WrestleMania. Banks and Bel Air had an epic match from Bell to Bell, but fans loved it when Bel Air won her first major championship on WWE’s main roster.

Rome rule vs. commercial punk vs. Seth Rollins

WrestleMania 41 Night One

If Rhodes vs Cena sometimes lacks some logic, then I have to say the opposite when it comes to other main events at WrestleMania 41. Paul Heyman was a major part of the Rome Reign, CM Punk and Seth Rollins storyline. In 2012, Heyman signed the Shield and did the dirty work of Punk, the then WWE champion. Punk then left WWE, and Heyman joined the chief of “his” tribe, Rome, years later.

Punk returned in 2023, and in the Survivor Series 2024, he helped out with Wargames on the Reigns team… but Heyman had a favor with him. Heyman split and ruled paranoidly from that point on, but things got worse when Seth Rollins was involved. Rollins chose not to stomp the raw, vulnerable Heyman he now owe. Seth Good feeling. Punk got a crush on him when he had Heyman in the corner at WrestleMania, but Seth gave him a final laugh after Heyman finally turned on his two former clients.

USOS vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn – WWE Uncontroversial Tag Team Championship

WrestleMania 39 Night One

From 2022 to early 2023, Samizain became an important part of the pedigree storyline. It all started by chance, but picked up a lot of steam, especially during a feud with Kevin Owens, an old friend/rival of Rome ruler Zain. Zayn eventually left Bloodline at Royal Rumble 2023 and sided alongside Owens.

Neither Zayn nor Owens abdicated the tribe’s chief, but they challenged fellow Bloodline member USO for the indisputable WWE Tag Team Championship. The four men played an epic match at WrestleMania 39, with the Canadian star winning the belt.

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Kevin Owens – No banned matches

WrestleMania 38 Night One

Stone Cold Steve Austin retired after losing to Lock at WrestleMania 19. WWE fans thought that since Owen Hart accidentally broke Austin’s neck at Summer Slam in 1997, Austin dealt with a neck injury, he would never see a rattlesnake again in a square circle inside the square circle.

However, Austin returned to WrestleMania 38 against Kevin Owens. The fact that their match was pretty good was Cherry at the top, considering it had been 19 years since Austin’s last wrestling match. It was a great, pleasant moment for older fans, and many young fans were able to watch Stone’s cold wrestling live at least once.

The end of Wrestlemania 39, the involvement of the rock, the pedigree victory at Wrestlemania on Saturday 40… After a roller coaster of emotions, Cody Rhodes finally had a rematch against the Roman reign in the main event on WrestleMania 40 Sunday.

Their match was a true classic and the final 10 minutes were very dramatic with some run-ins. The fans who attended loved every moment of it, and they became wild when Cody Rhodes finally finished the story to become the new WWE champion.
