AEW Star deals with potential partners to join WWE

The current AEW star is weighing on the possibility of returning to WWE after it was released in June 2021.

Previously known to WWE fans as Buddy Murphy, he is now more familiar with AEW fans as Matthews, a member of Hounds of Hell.

Matthews, who is now sidelined with injuries during AEW Grand Slam Australia, was recently sitting with Chris Van Vliet for a new interview.

Chris Van Vriette asked Matthews about his chances of returning to WWE during an insight interview. The Aew star revealed that he wants to be with his real wife, Rhea Ripley.

“I think that’s the big question. So I want to do something with her (Rhea Ripley). Stories like ours and our chemistry, I think we’re good TV.

“It’s definitely something, I want to scratch it, but the good thing about her in both WWE and me and us is that I never want it.

Matthews continues to describe Ripley as “the woman John Cena” before pondering what will happen to him and the benefits of being in a different company now.

“She’s a megastar. She’s a woman now John Cena. If I’m lowered, let’s say I’m doing a reinforcement match or something.

“Like I said, I don’t think it’s going to happen, but I wouldn’t even want it to be an option.

“Then, if something happens at work, I want her to be able to spit out at me without becoming me. I’m the other person in the back seat, yeah, I know what you’re doing, or you should do it like this, or make her rant and I can do the same to her.

“We can talk about positive things. We talk about negatives. Something that confuses us and everything, and that’s like we’re on the same team. It’s never going to be a competition.”

Matthews was previously a member of the Black family that effectively disbanded on the AEW departure of Malacay Black.

Black returned to WWE on April 25, 2025 on an episode of SmackDown and returned to his Aleister Black name.

Alongside Brody King, Black and Matthews hosted the AEW World Trios Championship.
