The WWE Raw match was announced by Pat McAfee, which was announced at the backlash pay-per-view on May 10th.

Last week on Raw, Gunther stole frustration after losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso at Wrestlemania.

Gunther’s dissatisfaction target was the presenter of Michael Cole and Pat McAfee, with the Austrian trying to suffocate Cole until McAfee made a save, before McAfee choked instead.

This incident led to great things for the storyline suspension and Gunther.

On tonight’s WWE Raw, a week after the attack, McAfee spoke to Gunther and challenged the former World Heavyweight Champion.

Smackdown general manager Nick Aldis fills out Raw GM Adam Pearce tonight and says Gunther’s suspension will be lifted in time for rebound, allowing Gunther and McAfee to play approved matches at St Louis’ PLE.

McAfee has already played several matches in WWE, with the final real playing against Baron Corbin at Summerslam 2022.

His in-ring debut took on Adam Cole in the 2020 NXT Takeover 30, and a few months later he took part in a wargame match as McAfee, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch faced an uncontroversial era.

McAfee also played a match against Austin Theory against WrestleMania 38 in April 2022, and was subsequently suspected of being “matched” between McAfee and Vince McMahon, which McAfee and McMahon acquired.

McAfee also technically defeated MIZ at WrestleMania 39 in 2023, but this wasn’t actually a full match, and was in the 2024 Royal Rumble, but was physically and eliminated after a few seconds.
