Pat McAfee Vs. Gunther is a smoke screen for WWE Dream Match

6 Min Read

When WWE heads to St. Louis, Missouri on May 10, 2025 Repulsion People at the premium live event, Enterprise Center witness the fight between former world heavyweight champion Gunther and current Monday night live commentator Pat McAfee. The response to this match was divisive, but in reality it may be a necessary step towards something much better for the ring in general. Gunther is one of the most protected and most treated wrestlers in the Triple H era, and despite not having a title around the waist, he remains unchanged. McAfee vs. Gunther explores the theory that it is simply a smokescreen for something else. It’s a match against Goldberg.

WWE teased Gunther and Goldberg’s dream match

Goldberg is expected to work on Gunther this year

  • WWE held the segment between Gunther and Goldberg in Bad Blood last year.
  • It has been announced that Goldberg will be playing a retirement match.
  • Many assume that Gunther will step up for his dream match.

Last year’s WWE Bad Blood 2024 Premium Live event featured a segment in which Gunther defeated Hall of Fame Goldberg in a promo while Gunther was sitting in the front row of the audience with his son. Goldberg didn’t take the Gunther jibe lightly and jumped over the barricade to approach the ring, but was stopped by security at his truck. This led to Sami Zain, the then Gunther World Heavyweight Championship rival, running into the ring and engaged in a brawl. At first, this felt like a mere innocent segment to build more feud between Zayn and Gunther.

A report by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer newsletter stated that the angle was made to set up a match between Goldberg and Gunther, but it was not certain if this was still an upcoming running plan. However, I believe this is still a plan based on the fact that nothing else has been teased about Goldberg’s upcoming retirement match, confirmed a few weeks after his angle with Gunther. A recent event on WWE programming over the past few weeks has only added fuel to the fire that Goldberg will return sooner later, and Gunther is “next.”

Goldberg helps Pat McAfee

McAfee’s Gunther’s rule turns the wheels

  • Golberg announced his retirement match at ESPN’s College Gameday.
  • Both Goldberg and Pat McAfee played in the NFL.
  • Goldberg will be the last hero before retiring.

Gunther dropped the World Heavyweight Championship against Jay Uso at WrestleMania 41 and in response to his loss, he removed his anger at the raw commentary team. Back to Michael Cole’s prejudice, Gunther attempts to suffocate the announcer. Pat McAfee nailed the gunser with his forearm accordingly, then choked himself. The following week, McAfee gave a passionate speech and rallyed the audience behind him as he tried to lift Gunther’s stop to bring about a fight. It was soon announced that McAfee will have a chance with a backlash PLE.

McAfee has some experience in the ring and has competed in the past with Adam Cole, Austin Theory, Baron Corbyn, and others, but few people still deceive himself when it comes to his most dangerous enemies. McAfee has no chance of winning. He will probably have a rather strong fight, but Gunther will ultimately benefit and destroy McAfee.

Our theory is that this leads to one of two things. The feud continues, and McAfee ultimately calls for someone to fight on behalf of someone else, otherwise multi-time world champion Goldberg comes to his own aid, steals Gunther himself and appears in his own pact. Goldberg’s retirement match was announced on ESPN’s College Gameday as the official 2025. Given the history of this and the respective NFL, WWE definitely twists these two men to have even greater connections, and Goldberg comes to his aid means a storyline.

Gunther Vs Timing Pat McAfee is the perfect return trip to Goldberg

Goldberg’s final match will be held soon

Gunther Wrestlemania 39

  • WWE usually travels to Saudi Arabia during this time of year.
  • WWE was able to postpone until Summerslam, not too far away.
  • Currently, there are no other clear plans for Gunther.

Goldberg revealed in an interview with the cast that his WWE retirement match is approaching the summer of 2025. This period correlates with one of WWE’s annual trips to Saudi Arabia. Goldberg has been frequented at Saudi shows for many years, but it also makes sense for WWE to hold farewell matches on stages like Summerslam.

I feel this timing for Gunther vs. Pat McAfee isn’t a coincidence, especially since WWE doesn’t have long pulling the trigger that builds from the world of professional wrestling towards Goldberg’s final bow. McAfee vs. Gunther may be a difficult drug to swallow for fans hoping to see the ring’s popular name, but this is just one step on the road to one of Gunther’s biggest matches so far.
