Aew’s Mercedes Mone is adding another title to her collection, reflecting on the match she described as “a dream come true.”

The match in question took place on the April 16 episode of AEW Dynamite, when Mone defeated Athena in the Owen Hart Foundation women’s tournament.

This match saw a response from WWE’s Naomi, who is very familiar with both competitors, and it seemed like he would send love and flowers to the duo.

In her latest issue of Mone Mag, the AEW TBS champion reflected her resolve during the match before revealing how to praise Athena.

“Just a year ago, I made my AEW debut at TD Garden, and coming back feels like a full circulur moment.

“This time I stepped into the ring with a new vibe, a new energy and a fierce determination that can only be obtained from growth and experience.

“Facing Athena was more than just a match, it was a dream come true. I admired her since our indie days. Her creativity and innovation in the ring is truly unparalleled.”

Mone then reflects that Athena signed with WWE in September 2015, joining NXT and knowing:

“I’m still excited when Sarah Del Rey said Athena had signed NXT. I was hoping to share the ring with her one day. Finally, that dream came to life at this incredible event.

“Athena is a great power, and after returning from the curtain, what I could think is amazing! Imagine an incredible story where we can tell if we had a pay-per-view match together.

The pair shared the ring multiple times in WWE, but in contrast to a one-on-one encounter, it was primarily a tag team and multi-woman match.

One of their early encounters was on April 23, 2018, on an episode of WWE Raw, where the then moon month defeated Ruby Riott and then banks with money in a bank-qualified triple threat match.

Athena is the current ROH Women’s World Champion, and during her reign she was able to see herself approaching the end, and concluded.

“While she rocked that ROH title for over 800 days, I can’t help but think about how amazing it would look to my hips.”

Athena may be the longest-running world ROH women’s champion, but Mone stands as the longest-running strong women’s champion of NJPW.

The final of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament will be held on May 25, 2025 at AEW Double or Nothing.

In the women’s tournament final, Mercedes’ Moon faces Jamie Hater after the latter victory over Chris Stallander.

Meanwhile, Will Osprey faces Hangman Adam Page in the final after winning their respective victories over Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher.
