When they were first announced, WWE The Women’s Tag Team Championship breathed new life into the division. The women’s roster was too talented and too deep to compete for two available titles. On the 2018 RAW Christmas Eve episode, Stephanie McMahon announced that the title will be introduced in 2019. The first champion was crowned in the elimination chamber, giving the women’s division an arm shot to take the game to a new level.
Unfortunately, the title has failed. WWE has consistently struggled to establish the right women’s tag team department, which usually relies on random combinations to hold money. The promotion also failed to create a compelling storyline surrounding titles that were not revolved around being used as props. More than six years later, the company has failed to build the fame of Tag Team Gold, poised for 2025 to continue a never-ending series of bad bookings.
The Women’s Tag Team Championship was a catalyst for a fascinating storyline
Jade Cargill and Naomi got in the spotlight from the money
- Naomi replaced Jade Cargill as half of the women’s tag team champions along with Bianca Belair after a mysterious attack.
- Naomi and Bella dropped their title a week before removal room PLE.
- Cargill returned to a feud with Naomi, and Bel Air has earned the right to challenge Aiyo Sky for the Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania 41.
When Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill won the Women’s Tag Team Championship at Bash in Berlin in 2024, it felt like a new era in the division was on the horizon. One of the hottest outlooks of the company, star of Bonafade’s main event and working together to win the title, could lead to something great for the division. A few weeks later, Jade Cargill was taken away in a vicious behind-the-scenes attack. Naomi took her place next to Bella, and a prominent rule continued.
But in reality, WWE was waiting for WrestleMania season. A week before Elimination Chamber PLE, Bella and Naomi dropped the title to Lib Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. With the PLE itself, Cargill returns to take away the attacker Naomi, but Bel Air has booked a Women’s World Championship match. Morgan and Rodriguez held the title, but they didn’t do much with them. Meanwhile, Cargill and Naomi embark on a singles feud, with Bella returning to the top of the card. The question must be titles that engage in meaningful abilities. The championship would have meant a lot more with three big stars fighting and snatching their claws for gold.
WWE has booked a title change and launched a storyline with Becky Lynch
Again, the spotlight has been taken from the women’s tag team championship
- Returning to the country with Lyra Valkyria, Becky Lynch defeated Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez at WrestleMania 41.
- Valkyria and Lynch lost their title to Morgan and Rodriguez the following night on Raw.
- Becky Lynch turned his heels to her partner.
Liv Morgan has repeatedly proven that he can make the most of what he is given. Morgan does most of the actual work in pairing with Rodriguez, with her elite character creations increasing titles per proxy. After beating Bella and Naomi for the title, they were the champions for just under two months.
At WrestleMania 41, they were scheduled to defend the title against Bailey and women’s Intercontinental champion Laila Valkyria. However, Bailey was taken away in another mystical attack, leaving Laila behind even though he had no opponent in the show’s show. Please enter Becky Lynch. The men returned and all four women had a strong show before Lynch and Valkyria won the championship. Arguably combined with the biggest female star of all time, the Rising Star and Double Championship could have done a lot for the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
In life after WrestleMania, Morgan and Rodriguez had a rematch. They won the title they lost the night before, but that wasn’t a highlight. After the match, Lynch was unloaded at Valkyria and turned his heels in the process. Again, the title was used as a meaningless prop to kickstart the storyline. It was a lazy booking that further devalued the title.
Liv Morgan should have been crucial in legalizing titles
Again, the title of the female tag pulls the rug from underneath
- Liv Morgan has the talent and ability to legalize women’s tag team championships.
- Morgan removes programming to shoot the film and leaves the title in Flux.
- The women’s tag team championship could retire tomorrow, and no one cared.
The only bright spot coming out of all this was that Liv Morgan’s work as champion was able to bring wonder to the title and perhaps the division. Considering the great work of half of last year, being half of the women’s tag team champions felt like a relegation, but if we could revive the women’s tag team division, it was Liv Morgan.
But now, Liv Morgan begins programming to film the film. Morgan’s absence hurts WWE overall, but essentially disables the possibility of activating the tag team’s title. Of course, Morgan is not negligent. The failure lies in the WWE. For six years they booked a meaningless title reign, played hot potatoes with gold whenever they wanted, and did not strive to build an actual female tag team department. The fact that fans responded more positively to the women’s US and InterContinental Championship is no coincidence.
WWE is thinking more about legalizing the championship. And the wrestlers involved are working hard as they were shot to establish two new titles in the women’s category. The future of the women’s tag team championship is unknown, but no one cares if WWE retires them tomorrow.
