A commentary team has been confirmed to call action at WWE Backlash 2025 in St. Louis tonight.
Tonight’s Premium Live event will see Pat McAfee’s return to ring-in action almost three years after his last actual match.
Raw’s color commentator McAfee usually forms a third of the PLE’s commenting team, alongside RAW partners Michael Cole and Smackdown’s Wade Barrett.
The team calling the action has been revealed as McAfee was unable to participate in commentary tonight due to a match against Gunther.
There is no “alternative” for McAfee, as events are called by the duo of Michael Cole and Wade Barrett. WWE confirmed it.
Cole and Barrett were regular partners in the past before Joe Tescitore came to WWE last year and paired up with Barrett.
Tessitore and Barrett are Smackdown’s current commentary team.
The aforementioned McAfee vs Gunther Match could be McAfee’s first “real” match since facing Baron Corbin in Summerslam 2022.
He made his in-ring debut with NXT against Adam Cole in 2020, and soon competed in Wargames Match after facing an uncontroversial era when McAfee, Pete Dunne, Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan faced an uncontroversial era.
McAfee continued his match against Austin Theory at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, losing.
Since then, he has also officially defeated Miz in WrestleMania 39 (again, not actually a “match”). Before he decided to eliminate himself, it was part of the 2024 Royal Rumble and didn’t have to face off against Bron Breakker and Omos.
