At Backlash 2025, Gunther stepped into the ring for a singles match with Pat McCuffy. This is a very unique milestone for Gunther, and it certainly is unusual. Since joining WWE, Gunther has competed in 18 matches at the main roster premium live event. This was his first singles match where there was nothing on the line. When it comes to Gunther’s singles matches, they were aimed solely for achievement – the InterContinental Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship and the King of the Ring Tournament are matches that won most of the time.
This shows how prominent Gunther has been in his previous WWE career, as his outing in singles competition has always been the most important thing.
For the first time in five years, both US and IC titles have been defended in B-level PPV

In the 2025 backlash, Jacob Fatu defended the US championship against Damien Priest, Drew McIntyre and La Knight and Dominique Mysterio. Many fans may have missed some interesting facts about the Men’s Midcard title. This is the first time since 2020 that both belts have been protected by the same card in WWE’s B-level PPV.
Clash of Champions 2020 was the event that took place, with Sami Zayn vs. AJ Styles vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy featured the American Championship in the Intercontinental title ladder match, with Bobby Lashley vs. Apollo Crew featured the American Championship. It should be noted that even in WWE’s “Big Four” events since 2020, it is generally rare that both titles are on the same match card (and the same night).

In Triple H’s booking style, many wrestlers miss being featured on match cards as WWE PLE normally hosts four or five matches. This is clear when you look at last year’s backlash cards compared to the 2025 event. Some fans may not notice, but last year there were only two wrestlers competing in, and they were able to attend the show again this year.
In 2024, Randy Orton teamed up with Kevin Owens to face Solosicore and Tamatonga in the Battle of Wild Street, while Damian’s priest defended the newly won World Heavyweight Championship against Jayuso. Orton faced John Cena in this year’s main event, and the priest challenged the US title. However, names like Tiffany Stratton, Bailey, Naomi, Cody Rhodes, AJ Style, Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, Asuka, Kairi Thane, and Jay Uso all missed consecutive backlash events.

Dominik Mysterio has been on the WWE main roster since 2020, but at the time he managed only a handful of singles matches at WWE PLE. His previous singles opponents were Seth Rollins, Cody Rhodes and Ray Mysterio.
Backlash 2025 took a big step forward for WWE’s career. He won a match in a major WWE event for the first time in singles action, beating Penta to maintain his Intercontinental title (though there is a lot of external interference).

While John Cena and Randy Orton have not turned the main event events into record numbers (that honor goes to Triple H), fans may have missed the fact that 2025 marks their third backlash main event together. The only other pairings to achieve this feat are John Cena and Edge.
Orton & Cena wrestled in the fatal four-way main event in both 2007 and 2008, but in 2025 they marked their first singles match at the backlash event. They have wrestled many times over the years, marking the final matchup together in 2025.
