Joe Hendry responded to criticism of his WrestleMania 41 match.
The TNA World Champion has been revealed as Randy Orton’s surprise opponent after Kevin Owens had to withdraw from the scheduled match due to a neck injury. Hendry scored a big pop and was able to make famous provocations during the match, but Viper defeated the current champion in nearly three minutes.
Many people criticized the booking and said it hurt TNA’s world title. Hendry responded to these claims in a new interview with Chris Van Vriette. The TNA star first explained that the match was not entirely one-sided and that he received several attacks.
“The feedback I got was exactly what was supposed to be. And, to be honest, next was the biggest show TNA had ever had in a decade. We attended Slami Baaree, so we were past 4,000.
Everything has to be a story: Joe Hendry
Joe Hendry explained elsewhere in the interview that the previous champions brought something different to the world title. He gave the example of Josh Alexander. Josh Alexander’s reign was to put in an instant classic match. The Viral Star explained that his goal is to do everything that is best for the business and bring as many eyes as possible to the company.
The 37-year-old also discussed how there were other stars who had a fast defeat at Wrestle Mania, but it didn’t affect their careers. According to him, it’s about the kind of story you can tell in the title:
“In wrestling, I think everything has to be a story. So in the film, does Rocky win every match? That is, Joe Hendry lost to Randy Orton. How will the champion recover from this?
People are quickly losing out at WrestleMania, and these are the stories we tell. When John Cena was defeated by the Undertaker, was that the path from here? And that’s something I really learned after seeing John Cena. It just makes everything a story. It’s all a story. So, that’s just, where am I going from here as a champion? ”
Apart from this, Joe Hendry talked about the advice John Cena gave him in his appearance in his Royal Rumble and his Triple H gestures at WrestleMania. You can check out his full interview below.
