Legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross has been diagnosed with colon cancer. The news was revealed this afternoon through AEW Star’s official X account. He said he was diagnosed this week and should undergo surgery within the next two weeks. Ross also thanked his fans for their support during this difficult time.
This is not the first time Ross has fought cancer since the former WWE broadcaster was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2021. Ross quickly announced that he had successful treatment, but continued to deal with the later stages of surgery for several years.
Meanwhile, Ross continued to appear in AEW programming occasionally, often part-time obligations at company pay-per-view events. Most recently, Ross appeared in the AEW dynasty in April.
Ross has been with AEW since his first show in 2019. Before that, commentators had already had a long and renowned career, beginning as a judge in the mid-1970s before taking on the broadcast role. About ten years after his career, Ross became famous as one of the lead commentators for the Jim Crockett Promotions, and soon became known as World Championship Wrestling.
In 1993, Ross moved to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation, where he would spend the next 20 years. His voice became synonymous with company during that time, but he occasionally challenged McMahon. Ross left WWE in 2013 and spent several years giving English commentary for New Japan’s professional wrestling. He then ended up joining AEW after having another part-time stint with WWE.
