Dave Meltzer says there’s more to it than business with WWE’s approach to Mexico

Last month, WWE revealed its interest in increasing viewership in Mexico. The company bought the Lucha Libre AAA and quickly scheduled a crossover show that includes talent from both AAA and NXT. On top of that, there are rumours that the announcement of a major main roster show in Mexico is right around the corner.

Dave Meltzer is talking about the latest “Wrestling Observer Radio” and shared his belief that WWE’s motivations go beyond strictly business, and that “ego” is involved in the decision-making of the company. Meltzer also called Mexico the “battlefield” in the ongoing wrestling war between WWE/AAA and AEW/CMLL.

“We don’t have much money for WWE to make there,” Meltzer said. “Obviously, CMLL is a company that has a great business right now in Mexico. WWE is on the way. They got the AAA show on June 15th. They do the WWE show. They don’t know the date yet, but I know they’re planning a big show with Cody Rhodes as the top star of that show.

The June 15 show mentioned by Meltzer is Triple Mania Regia III, which will be held at Arena Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. On the same day, hundreds of miles away in Mexico City, CMLL will also host a show featuring AEW talent.

According to Booker and former WCW star Konnan, WWE still has no complete control of the AAA. Producer Jeremy Borasch is said to be a key player in the transition and is thought to serve as a liaison between WWE and AAA once everything is in place.
