Wrestling Championships that were not fame

13 Min Read

Many titles have been introduced and faded without much influence in the history of wrestling. Obviously there were a lot of small promotions that pushed their big titles, and that ended up with those companies. There have also been attempts to promote such as WCW. WWE Create a larger belt that didn’t work. But it’s interesting to see some big companies trying to push major championships that they never think would be honored.

These aren’t just vanity and novel titles like the Million Dollar Championship and FTW titles. Nor is it an obvious joke championship like a 24/7 title. These are titles that didn’t feel like a big deal, and most people end up talking about it. These are 10 wrestling championships that have received major support but have never felt honored and show that even the most talented wrestlers can’t make the belt meaningful.

WWE Cruiserweight Championship

WWE really didn’t care about cruiserweight

Version

Original (2001-2007)

Second (2016-2022)

Famous Champion

  • Rey Mysterio

  • Matt Hardy

  • Billy Kidman

  • Chaboguerrero

  • Neville

  • Enzo Amole

  • Cedric Alexander

  • Jordan Devlin

This is odd as WWE had the cruiserweight championship. There may be great title holders like Rey Mysterio, Matt Hardy, Paul London, and Gregory Helms, but WWE doesn’t seem to care much. He was only protected twice in Wrestle Mania, reigning too fast or barely dragging out in defense, and a man like Nunzio was held before retiring at the hands of Hornswoggle.

Being part of the 205 Live in 2016 was back, but only suffered when WWE tried to make Enzo Amore the face of the brand, and when it tried to backfire. The 205 live bounced back before it merged with NXT, and the belt didn’t connect with the strangely fresh stars. It was eventually unified with the 2022 NXT North American Championship and the showcase of WWE’s failure to get Cruiserweights to work properly.

WWE’s ECW Championship

The WWE Revival was destined from the start

The revival of WWE’s ECW was probably destined to fail at all times. The company wanted it to be a notable brand with its own title, but the warning sign came when Rob Van Dam was caught in legal trouble shortly after being nominated for the first champion. He lost it to the Big Show – far from what the ECW brand represented. That led to the long and ugly trails of the Champion.

Some people may be good like commercial punk, but there are also people like Jack Swagger and Bobby Lashley who didn’t suit them. The Belt hit a low point when Vince McMahon himself won just to prove that ECW was dead. That last champion was Ezekiel Jackson. This is an oddly appropriate choice for a ride that most ECW fans want to erase from history.

AEW World Trios Championship

Probably the most important AEW title

A common complaint about AEW is that there are too many titles. The Trios Championship is on display for its discussion. The six-person tag team title is difficult to do the job, but it still seems to be a problem with this. When the elites won, the Belt had a bad start, but was wiped out by the entire behind-the-scenes blunder of CM Punk.

Since then, the belt has bounced around various trios. The fact that fans continue to mix with the Roh Trios Championship is useless. Some wrestlers aren’t that bad for the belt, but many AEW fans won’t be upset if the company leaves.

Grass’s “Unified World” Championship

There is nothing “unification”

Jerry Lawler unified the AWA, WCCW and USWA Unified World Championships

This championship made a list for how big a deal it was and never got close to living on it. In 1988, AWA, World Class and Continental began working together. In SuperClash III, AWA champion Jerry Lawler defeated WCCW champion Kerry Von Erich to integrate the belt and create a new title. The intention was to protect it in all areas as a “uniform” championship.

However, shortly after the show, Roller and AWA owner Verne Gagne fell, leaving Lawler behind the belt. He defended this “Unified World Title” in Memphis. WCCW was then acquired by the CWA and became the American Wrestling Association. The USWA was the last of the classic territory and even had a partnership with the WWE. However, for all Jerry Lawler’s speeches, their belts were not uniformed and were not considered close to the world title.

WWE Divas Championship

The butterfly belt looked stupid

The WWE Diva Championship is an obvious choice. Although it had a long lifespan in WWE, it was not considered a very large trade. It didn’t help that this was a time when women in WWE were given little actual matches and most of them were terrible periods. The belt itself was one of the most glimpses of on television, and it didn’t help that the butterfly design and coloring looked like a poor trinket.

There were some great title holders throughout history, like Mickie James, Paige, AJ Lee, and others, offset by very bad people. The problem was that it wasn’t until Charlotte judged that the woman wrestling in WWE meant something. At that point, Belt was about to retire. Fans don’t think much about the “diva” era, including the title.

NWA National Heavyweight Championship

In two incarnations, it is ignored

During the territorial era, it was common to use the main belt for local championships. That includes the Georgia territory, which creates national championships that are primarily defended on that territory. It was a somewhat big deal under Jim Crockett’s promotion, but it turned pale next to the US title, and in 1986 the US title was eventually unified.

The belt was revived in 1997 and then revived again 10 years later. It is still defended in the NWA under Billy Corgan, but it has not found much of an infamous name (it doesn’t help that the NWA is a bit of a mess today). For what is called a national title, this belt is not considered a major wrestling award.

NXT UK Women’s Championship

This didn’t have the strength of the main NXT women’s title

run

  • Kay Lee Ray

  • Meiko Satomura

It’s strange to say that the NXT UK Women’s Championships have not separated from the prestigious prestigious, given that the first two champions, Rhea Ripley and Toni Storm, are now two of two female wrestlers. However, while the British championship seemed important, the women’s titles didn’t have the same aura around them. The fact that Kay Lee Ray’s reign occurred during the Covid-19 pandemic, when NXT UK had no shows, certainly didn’t help.

Before the NXT UK brand was dropped, Satellite Forest was the final champion, and the belt was unified by the Mandy Rose. The short life of the title is a contribution, but the main NXT women’s championships have a great reputation, but the British counterpart never reached that level.

WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship

These belts have been feeling wasteful for a long time

You can say anything about the TNA Knockout Tag Team Championship, but it has always been considered better than the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. There were excellent title holders like Sasha Banks & Bailey and the Warriors of the Songs and Dance, but most were bad and often forgotten, some of which only had a few weeks of belts.

Each team of Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill Powerhouse had teams like Raquel Rodriguez and Aliyah. The belt is not a critical championship, but a fashion trinket, making the short-lived NXT version even worse. It is confusing that women’s titles are too poor in an age where WWE is giving women more chances than ever before.

TNA Legends/Global/Television Championship

Only TNA could have so many names for one championship

The X-Division Championship was a great belt for TNA, but the main roster still needed a secondary championship. This was TNA and they had to make it ridiculously complicated. It began in 2008 as the TNA Legends Championship. This is the gimmick belt held by Booker T, which became official when AJ Styles acquired it. It was renamed the Global Championship in 2009, and in 2010 it was renamed the TV title.

The belt had prominent title holders like Mick Foley, Abyss, Samoa Joe and others, but despite trying to push TNA, it never felt like a big deal. Finally, it became the King of the Mountain Championship in 2015. It was eventually unified with the TNA world title in 2016, ending the troubling existence summarizing many TNA issues.

WWE European Championship

The Europeans barely held it

It may have lasted much longer than the other belts on this list, but to blunt, the WWE European Championship was by no means a big deal. It was created purely as a display by Davey Boy Smith in order to attract more attention in the European market. In that five-year existence, Smith and William Regal were only Europeans who hold it should say a lot.

The belt had decent champions like Triple H, Kurt Angle, but was often given to fewer stars like Valvenis and Crush Holly. It was a bit “retired” before its revival, and was often co-hosted by the Intant Sininian champions of the time. With the IC titles finally unified in 2002, they boasted a very cool design and had fans, but the titles aimed at defending the entire continent were ultimately less fame.
