In total, 148 wrestlers have held the WWE championship since Buddy Roberts became the first champion in 1963. When considering both the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the WWE Universal Championship, 98 wrestlers have collectively held 223 reigns of WWE’s four major world titles over the last 72 years.
What’s truly revealing is that the majority of WWE’s world champions—80 out of 98—hail from the United States, with only 18 being from other countries. This statistic reflects WWE’s roots as a U.S.-based promotion, dominating the industry without significant international expansion for decades.

Interestingly, while the record for most champions is largely American, only a handful of foreign wrestlers have secured WWE World Championships. Meanwhile, Edge holds the record for the most reigns in the history of the original WWE World Heavyweight Championship, although he has won the title only once.
Notably, Italian-American wrestling icon Bruno Sammartino, although born in Italy, became an American citizen and is remembered for his monumental popularity among Italian-Americans. His two championship reigns in the 1960s and 1970s remain legendary, with an astounding record of 4,040 days as champion—1,855 days longer than Hulk Hogan’s six reigns. Sammartino’s first reign holds the record for the longest at 2,803 days, a benchmark that even contemporary figures like Roman Reigns, who reigned in the early 2020s, aspire to match.
