Kazuchika Okada has reacted to the official announcement of his upcoming match against Kenny Omega at AEW in Texas, scheduled for Saturday, July 12th. The announcement was made during last night’s AEW Dynamite, hinting at a moment teased since Omega’s return to wrestling in January. AEW President Tony Khan confirmed that Omega and Okada will face off in a singles match in 2025.
This will mark their first one-on-one match since NJPW’s Dominion event in June 2018. The bout will be for both Omega’s AEW International Championship and Okada’s AEW Continental Championship. After the announcement, Omega posted on Twitter, saying “Chapter 5,” while Okada simply wrote, “It’s time.”
In their previous singles encounters, Omega has two wins, Okada has one, and they have one 60-minute time-limit draw. Although they haven’t met in singles competition since 2018, they wrestled against each other in an April six-man tag team match on AEW Dynamite. Okada has held the AEW Continental Championship for over 400 days and is one of only two champions since the title’s introduction in December 2023. Omega has held the AEW International Championship since March and recently defended it in a four-way match on AEW Dynamite.
Fan Take: This highly anticipated match is a monumental moment for AEW fans, bringing together two of wrestling’s greatest performers with championships on the line. It promises to elevate the sport by blending top-tier storytelling and in-ring excellence, possibly setting new standards in professional wrestling.
