In a discussion on the Keepin’ IT 100 podcast, Konnan revealed that he was the one who suggested Del Rio provoke El Hijo Del Vikingo’s father, generating buzz about the incident. Konnan explained that many didn’t perceive the segment as staged, leading actual security to intervene when the altercation escalated. One guard ended up being pushed away and was reluctant to get involved.
Konnan noted that the two security personnel were affiliated with AAA, and he had specifically asked Del Rio to provoke them. When they met on a Saturday, he reminded Del Rio about not following up on this request the first time, to which Del Rio promised to handle it that night and ended up physically confronting one of the guards.
“No one else thought it was staged, so the real security tried to break it up, and one of them was pushed away, saying, ‘Yeah, I don’t want any part of this.’ Interestingly, those guards work for AAA. So, when I ran into him on Saturday, I told him, ‘I asked you to get physical with them, and you didn’t.’ He replied, ‘I’ll do it tonight,’ and then he went outside and really went after one of them.”
Del Rio then kicked El Hijo Del Vikingo’s father in the stomach, tore his shirt off, and violently attacked him with punches. This was all part of the buildup to the May 31 match between Del Rio and Vikingo, where Vikingo ultimately triumphed and claimed the AAA Mega Championship. Notably, it seems that Del Rio’s future with WWE doesn’t look promising.
