AEW Lifts Ban on Mexican Beasts: Exclusive Arena Behind-the-Scenes Report Unveiled

AEW’s Grand Slam Mexico event on June 18th originally planned for the Young Bucks to team up with the Death Riders against the OPPS team. However, just hours before the match, Beast Mortos was named as the replacement for Castagnoli. According to the Wrestling Observer newsletter by Dave Meltzer, Mortos’s presence on this list ties back to his early wrestling days. As a young wrestler, he performed in CMLL under the name Cemental and in 2012 secretly tried out for their rival promotion AAA, which led to a ban preventing him from working alongside CMLL wrestlers. Recently, this ban was lifted, reportedly because Mortos was backing his girlfriend, current AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Moné, during AEW’s visit to Mexico. AEW President Tony Khan negotiated with Salvador Lutteroth III, CMLL’s owner, to allow Mortos to replace Castagnoli. Mortos is now considered an AEW talent without ties to AAA or WWE, which previously complicated his status, allowing him to perform at Arena Mexico after a 14-year ban.

Fan Take: This development is significant for AEW fans because it shows the promotion’s growing ability to navigate complex wrestling politics and secure talent flexibility in key markets like Mexico. It also highlights AEW’s rising influence internationally, which could lead to more high-profile matches and expanded opportunities for wrestlers in the global scene.
