WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is widely recognized as one of the biggest names in wrestling today. However, before rising to fame as the iconic high-flyer, he had a humble beginning. In the series “No Contested Ring,” Mysterio recounted his early wrestling days and how his legendary uncle played a crucial role in his career development. His passion for wrestling started at a very young age.
He shared, “I grew up watching my uncle, went to school with him, and he would show me moves since I was about five or six years old. I wanted to be a wrestler from the moment I fell in love with it.”
When Mysterio started wrestling professionally, he didn’t initially use the name “Rey Mysterio.” Instead, his uncle gave him a unique first ring name. His debut wrestling persona was quite distinctive.
“The Green Lizard was just a one-time gimmick. My uncle, who was excellent at naming new wrestlers, then gave me the name Hummingbird, or ‘Colibri’ in Spanish. It really became my identity, and I felt comfortable with it. Although I am Rey Mysterio’s son, I was ‘The Hummingbird,'” he explained.
For almost three years, he competed under the name “Hummingbird” before eventually becoming Rey Mysterio Jr., a beloved star to millions of fans globally.
