Randy Orton is back in great shape now, but the WWE icon admits his road to recovery included some unhealthy detours and indulgent holiday treats. On the podcast “What is Your Story? With Steph McMahon,” Orton revealed that his weight soared past 300 pounds during his recovery from spinal fusion surgery.
When he found out he’d be out of action for a while, Orton confessed that his eating habits spiraled out of control. “I went from 240 to 250, then took it to the extreme. During the winter, I was just over 300 pounds,” he said. He humorously referred to himself as having “sugar teeth from hell” and openly admitted how much he indulged in holiday snacks.
Orton recalled going through a “Nutella phase,” which, along with a large amount of chocolate and caramel popcorn, contributed to his weight gain over Christmas. Once he got the green light to start training again, he made a determined effort to fix the damage. With help from a new trainer, he revamped his diet and hit the gym hard.
“My diet has changed. I gained weight while I was out, but now I’ve maintained the same weight with a better ratio of muscle to fat,” he explained. Orton is now focusing on strengthening his posterior chain to protect his spine, resulting in a leaner, stronger version of himself on this week’s Friday Night SmackDown.
With Drew McIntyre back in the picture, Orton is gearing up to settle their unfinished business in a major singles match during the Saturday night main event on July 12th.
