Dave Meltzer Predicts WWE Targeting Former Star, Yet AEW Set to Seal the Deal

Last month, reports surfaced that WWE is eyeing CMLL star Mistico, also known as Sin Cara, following his match against MJF at AEW Grand Slam Mexico. Over the past year, WWE has signed luchadors like Rey Phoenix and Penta and acquired the rights to the well-known Mexican promotion AAA, with Mistico likely being their next target. However, according to Dave Meltzer on a recent episode of “Wrestling Observer Radio,” AEW President Tony Khan is determined to sign Mistico despite WWE’s attempts.

Meltzer stated, “Yeah, they’ll give it a try. I don’t think there’s any way they haven’t tried regarding what Mistico offers. I mentioned years ago that WWE wouldn’t push him beyond a certain level. Tony Khan might sign him and possibly allow him to perform at Arena Mexico, giving WWE only a couple of shows a year, rather than losing him altogether.”

Additionally, Meltzer suggested that WWE typically offers big contracts to major stars from other promotions, but the final deal amounts aren’t as large as expected. In contrast, he noted that Khan is willing to pay a premium to acquire talent and has proven this by outbidding WWE before.

(Fan Take) This development is crucial for WWE fans because signing a high-profile luchador like Mistico could enhance WWE’s Latino talent roster and broaden their appeal to international audiences. Meanwhile, the competition between WWE and AEW in acquiring key stars keeps the wrestling world exciting and pushes both promotions to innovate and invest in top talent.
