MJF has returned to Mexico, this time with his sights set on a cash prize.
CMLL announced on Wednesday that the former AEW International Champion will be back next week to challenge Averno for the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship. This title match is scheduled for the event dubbed A Magnificent Friday in Mexicania on August 1st.
This will be MJF’s second appearance in CMLL; he made his debut earlier this month by defeating Temple Lario. More recently, he faced Mystico at AEW Grand Slam Mexico, a match that ended in disqualification amid rising tensions. Their rivalry, which has been cultivated throughout the summer, hints at a potential rematch during the CMLL anniversary show in September.
Averno, the current holder of the Light Heavyweight Championship since March 2024, has only defended his title four times in nearly 500 days. His last defense was against Mystico in May, meaning MJF is the first challenger in over two months.
Amid his storyline feud with Mark Briscoe in AEW, MJF enters CMLL with a serious mindset. He also possesses AEW World Title opportunities at any time due to his recent victory in a casino gauntlet.
With all the action happening in AEW, MJF’s pursuit of CMLL Gold adds another exciting twist to an already unpredictable summer for him.
Fan Take: This news is significant for wrestling fans as it showcases MJF’s ambition to dominate in multiple wrestling promotions, which could elevate the prestige of the CMLL title. Additionally, the ongoing rivalry with Mystico adds a compelling narrative arc that enhances the drama and excitement surrounding both brands, ultimately benefiting the sport as a whole.
