NJPW recently faced a setback in the G1 Climax Tournament as IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Gabe Kidd has officially withdrawn due to a right knee injury.

Kidd began his G1 campaign with a loss to Conosuke Takeshita on July 19th, and the injury was confirmed at an NJPW event in Tokyo on Friday.

“I had high hopes of continuing in the G1 climb, but after speaking with the doctor, I have no chance of being cleared, so I have to withdraw,” Kidd expressed to the audience. “This really sucks. It’s been a tough mental struggle since I learned about the injury.”

No further medical information has been released, and NJPW has not yet announced whether Kidd will need to vacate the IWGP Global Heavyweight title. Kidd won the championship from Yota Tsuji in June and made a successful defense against Tanaka Nishijima just weeks ago. He remains hopeful, expressing gratitude for the support he’s received and his determination to return even stronger.

“On a positive note, I’ve received hundreds of supportive messages from fans encouraging me to take the time I need and come back strong,” he shared. “I promise you one thing: when I’m back on that blue mat, you’ll see the best version of Gabe Kidd.”

This withdrawal creates a significant gap in the G1 climax, leaving fans questioning the future of Kidd’s title reign and when he will be cleared to compete again.

It’s a significant blow for both NJPW and Gabe Kidd, but he’s staying positive. Should Kidd be compelled to vacate the title, or should he retain it until he’s fit to return? Share your thoughts in the comments.
