Priscilla Kelly opens up about the controversial tampon incident that sparked widespread backlash and her response to claims of damaging women’s wrestling.
In a podcast with Saraya titled Rule Breaker, Kelly shared how the viral moment coincided with a struggle for her mental health, highlighting the support she received from wrestling legends like Rita. The situation arose during a series of over 21 shows in California, where Kelly aimed to make her matches stand out in a unique setting without a traditional wrestling ring.
“It was a show at a bar for 21 and up… without a ring. You have to find a way to make your match different from others happening at the same venue… I had an idea.”
She confirmed that the tampon used was real (and notable), and her opponent was fully aware of it. However, once the footage went viral months later, the reaction was overwhelmingly harsh and personal.
“I thought this video would never go public… I was just doing my job at GNC, and suddenly my phone blew up. The internet erupted, and it was really tough initially.”
Kelly revealed that some of the most hurtful comments came from her childhood idols.
“Many wrestling celebrities expressed their disapproval, which embarrassed me and made me feel I was reversing progress for women in wrestling.”
This sentiment haunted her, leading to feelings that the backlash could ruin her career.
“I was at GNC, panicking because I couldn’t escape the negativity… I was in a really dark place mentally.”
However, a message from Rita changed everything.
“Rita reached out, saying, ‘I think you’re incredible.’ That lifted me out of my mental slump.”
With encouragement from other wrestling legends like Tommy Dreamer and Taz, Kelly began to reclaim her narrative.
“I ended up creating T-shirts featuring tampons, with all proceeds going to help women in other countries gain access to similar products.”
In response to her critics, she transformed their negativity into a sense of purpose.
“Some people called it ridiculous, but they don’t grasp the importance of what I’m doing.”
And as for those who doubted her future in wrestling?
“Just a week later, I booked my first tour in England… I focused on delivering an outstanding match. I wanted to prove everyone wrong and show that I can excel in many aspects.”
While Priscilla Kelly may have shocked the wrestling community, she refused to let that define her. She confronted her critics and turned their hatred into motivation, showcasing her rightful place in the industry.
