AEW President Tony Khan has shared an update regarding the eagerly awaited AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship, confirming that the championship does exist but its rollout has been delayed. He attributed the delay to a spate of serious injuries within the women’s division, which has impacted plans for introducing the titles.
In an interview with WGN Radio’s Iridian Fierro, Khan expressed his intention to hold a tournament to crown the first AEW Women’s Tag Team Champions. However, he highlighted the challenges posed by numerous recent injuries, especially around the Texas Pay-per-View event. Khan explained, “There have been many injuries in the women’s department. I hope we are now moving towards better health. During the female casino gauntlet match I organized, about a quarter of the participants were forced out due to injuries, including Syuri, Thunder Rosa, and Mina Shirakawa.”
He emphasized that while the championship belts have already been produced, they need a healthy and stable women’s roster to be properly supported. The injury issues have also affected the Ring of Honor brand, with ROH Women’s World TV Champion Red Velvet absent and interim champion Mina Shirakawa, who had stepped in, being one of the injured wrestlers.
Khan said, “The injuries and various roster challenges are why the tag titles can’t be introduced right now, but that’s my goal. The belts exist, they are ready, and I want to launch the division when we have the full, healthy roster available.”
Despite these setbacks, progress continues with the AEW Women’s World Championship. On tonight’s AEW Dynamite, the champion “Timeless” Toni Storm will compete in a title eliminator match against The Ligning, an ally of Athena, who is the number one contender after winning a casino gauntlet match at the same venue where the injury occurred.
Fan Take: This update is crucial for AEW fans as it shows the company’s commitment to protecting their talent while still progressing the women’s division. Once the roster is healthy, the introduction of the Women’s Tag Team Championship could significantly elevate women’s wrestling in AEW and add fresh excitement to the sport.
