John Cena is a globally recognized figure, and this fame extends into his family life as well. In a recent interview with Stephanie McMahon, Cena shared a story about an interview her father conducted.
He mentioned, “He interviewed local TV after my last match, and the local news introduced him as ‘John Cena’s father,’ without even mentioning me as his son.”
Interestingly, this wasn’t an oversight but a nod to his father, who is also known by the name John Cena. The younger Cena revealed that his father has always been a passionate wrestling fan, which is a big part of who he is.
“My dad has always been a wrestling fanatic. It’s just how he operates,” Cena explained.
Despite their shared love for wrestling, their relationship hasn’t always been smooth. Reflecting on their past, Cena admitted that if he had talked about his father a decade ago, his tribute would have been brief and distant, recognizing mentors but not truly acknowledging his dad.
“If I had spoken about my father ten years ago, my eulogy would have been simple—’he was just a man, thank you for coming.’ I would have mentioned the more important mentors in my life,” he said.
However, his perspective has evolved, leading to a more understanding and peaceful relationship. He no longer judges his father but tries to understand him better.
“My relationship with my dad has improved. Now, when we meet, it happens in controlled settings—neutral, public places so it can start off casually,” Cena shared.
Like his son, his father is also well known in the pro wrestling world, working as a manager under the name “Johnny Fabulous.” For the 17-time WWE World Champion, the tribute he now gives to his father is far different from what he imagined ten years ago.
“Now, when I get the chance to speak highly of my father, people see just how great he is, and he hasn’t changed at all,” Cena added.
