This weekend marks the debut of the first-ever two-day WWE SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Ahead of the event, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter revealed fresh insights into the creative direction planned for the show.
Dave Meltzer disclosed that multiple championships are expected to change hands during the two nights. Cody Rhodes is favored to defeat John Cena for the undisputed WWE Championship, while Jade Cargill aims to topple Tiffany Stratton for the WWE Women’s Title. Gunther is anticipated to lose the World’s Helveit Championship. Additionally, Lyra Valkyria is likely to reclaim Becky Lynch’s Women’s Intercontinental Championship, and Andrade and Rey Fenix are expected to come out on top in the six-pack table, ladder, and chair matches for the WWE Tag Team Titles.
Regarding the men’s world title matches, Meltzer mentioned a planned Money in the Bank cash-in by Seth Rollins after the Gunther vs. Punk bout. However, Rollins suffered a knee injury during the main event of WWE Saturday Night last month, casting doubt on the storyline’s continuation. While Meltzer notes the plan was to proceed post-Punk’s victory, it remains unclear if WWE will follow through.
On the Rhodes vs. Cena match, Meltzer hinted at a potential double turn with Rhodes turning heel and Cena becoming a babyface regardless of the match outcome. There was also discussion about a possible character shift for China, with hopes that he will revert to a babyface by his December match.
Fan Take: This update is thrilling for WWE fans as it promises significant title changes and intriguing storyline twists that could reshape the roster landscape. If executed well, these plans have the potential to inject new energy and unpredictability into WWE programming, keeping the sport fresh and exciting.
