Muhammad Hassan, one of WWE’s most contentious characters, was removed from television in 2005, just a year after his debut on the main roster. Even after two decades, fans have yet to see Hassan make a comeback in the ring, though there’s a possibility that could change someday.
In a recent interview on Thea2thek Wrestling Podcast, Mark Copani, the performer behind Hassan, reflected on the chance of returning. Given the character’s controversial nature and the charged political climate from 20 years ago, Copani is cautious about reprising the role of an Arab American heel.
He stated, “It depends on how it is presented because I can’t go out there and pretend to be Muhammad Hassan. I mean, screaming out loud, I’m the director of HR. My job is rules and perception.”
Although Copani no longer aims to provoke audiences with themes involving racism or prejudice, his love for wrestling remains strong. He admitted that the thrill of the crowd and being in the ring is something he misses and wouldn’t rule out returning to the sport in a scenario where “anyone can defeat anyone.”
Copani clarified that any return wouldn’t mark a full comeback but rather a “one and done” event. However, with ongoing political sensitivities, it’s uncertain if WWE will allow the kind of smart, one-time appearance Copani hopes for, even after 20 years since his departure.
