MJF has returned to CMLL with the goal of capturing the CMLL World Light Heavyweight title, and he achieved that when he defeated Averno to become the new champion.
During the August 1st, 2025 episode of CMLL Viernes eSpectacular at a Mexican arena, MJF faced Averno in the main event, where Averno was defending his championship against the Salt of the Earth.
The match was intense from beginning to end, culminating in MJF injuring Averno’s knee and forcing him to tap out to a half club submission. With this victory, MJF has claimed the title of CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion.
This marks MJF’s first championship in CMLL, his initial light heavyweight title, and the 14th singles title of his wrestling career. Averno had held the title for 491 days, defending it successfully five times before his defeat by MJF.
