Two former WWE Superstars, Zack Ryder and Dolph Ziggler, made brief appearances last week during the Last Time is Now tournament, which determined who would face John Cena on December 13th. Recently, David Otunga, a former member of the villainous Nexus faction, spoke with podcaster Chris Van Vleet regarding the possibility of returning to WWE.
On the latest episode of Insight with Chris Van Vleet, Otunga, who is both a lawyer and former wrestler, expressed that he has no issues with WWE and would definitely come back if invited. He mentioned, “Yeah, if they call, yeah, absolutely. Like I said, it was a lot of fun. I still do announcements at Fourth Rope and other indie promotions, but the training I received in WWE prepared me for that.”
Otunga’s wrestling career spanned from 2009 to 2015, with his last match being a loss to R-Truth during the WWE Live SummerSlam Heatwave Tour. From 2015 to 2020, he transitioned into roles as a commentator and pre-show panelist before his release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his WWE tenure, Otunga was a two-time WWE Tag Team Champion—once with John Cena, which lasted only one day, and once with Michael McGillicty (Curtis Axel) for 80 days. The brief reign with Cena ended when Cena’s partner left, leading to Cena joining the Nexus.
On November 17, which marked Cena’s final WWE RAW appearance, Otunga reminisced on Instagram about their short tag team title reign, posting, “In honor of this being #JohnCena’s last #WWEraw, let’s not forget when he walked out on me after we won the #WWE Tag Team Titles together!”
Although Otunga is no longer wrestling, there remain opportunities for him to contribute in other capacities in WWE, especially as Cena approaches the end of his career.
Fan Take: This news excites WWE fans as it hints at the potential return of a beloved figure, David Otunga, at a pivotal time with John Cena’s WWE farewell approaching. Otunga’s return could add a nostalgic and dynamic layer to WWE programming, bridging past storylines with current events and giving fans lasting memories.
