AEW Stars Reflect on Their Championship Tournament Defeat

2 Min Read

An AEW star recently opened up about his defeat in the championship tournament, reflecting on his journey over the past five years to reach this point. During the November 19 episode of AEW Dynamite, two matches from the first-ever Women’s World Tag Team Tournament took place. Timeless Love Bombs (Tony Storm & Mina Shirakawa) overcame Alex Windsor & Riho, while the semifinal rivals were set after Tay J (Tay Mero & Anna Jay) faced Marina Shafir and Megan Bain—both participants in last week’s inaugural Women’s Blood and Guts match. Shafir and Bain advanced to the semifinals, leaving Tay Mero to share his thoughts on the loss.

On Twitter, Mero reminisced about conversations with Anna Jay during the COVID-19 shutdown, when they dreamed of competing for the tag team titles. He expressed how meaningful the dream becoming reality was, yet how painful it was to lose in the first round despite their dedication, growth, and effort. Acknowledging that outcomes don’t always go as hoped, he thanked fans for their support and love throughout their journey and shared a heartfelt message to Anna Jay. The post also appeared on Instagram, featuring a photo of the duo, some Tay Jay-themed babywear, and a supportive comment from fellow AEW star Sammy Guevara.

Mero made his return to AEW TV earlier this year, with his first match in nearly two years at the Summer Blockbuster in June. During Anna Jay’s time away, Mero and Guevara welcomed their first child, Luna, born in November 2023.

Fan Take: This heartfelt reflection from Tay Mero underscores the genuine passion and persistence behind AEW’s rising stars, reminding fans that setbacks are part of the journey. It adds a deeply human element to the sport, fostering a stronger connection between wrestlers and their audience while highlighting the excitement and drama in AEW’s women’s tag team division.
