During his tenure as WCW’s promoter, Eric Bischoff experimented with various unique wrestling rules, including triple cage matches and the infamous Chamber of Horrors, which are considered some of the most extreme match types in WCW history. Recently, in an interview with the Toronto Sun, Bischoff shared which common wrestling stipulation he has never been fond of.
Reflecting on the multi-person matches like War Games in WCW, Bischoff expressed that battle royals were his least favorite because they often seemed chaotic and unorganized. He explained, “I’ve never really enjoyed the concept of a battle royale. Just having multiple people in a ring makes me angry. It’s super frustrating at first because you’re looking at a ring full of guys and they’re walking around in circles, throwing weird-looking punches, and you’re not paying attention to the guy in the back who’s about to hit you in the head with something. There’s a lack of logic in any kind of multiplayer match. It’s hard to get over the hump.” However, he does make an exception for the Royal Rumble, praising its structured format that cycles participants and creates expectations and surprises.
Bischoff also noted that, although WarGames is more organized, it is still a match type he hasn’t enjoyed as a fan or promoter. WWE is set to present War Games at the Survivor Series event on November 29th at Petco Park in San Diego, California.
Fan Take: This insight from Bischoff reveals how match structure and storytelling are crucial for engaging multi-person wrestling contests. For WWE fans, understanding his perspective highlights why creative formats like the Royal Rumble and War Games continue to thrive, emphasizing the importance of order and excitement in keeping the audience invested in large-scale matches.
