WWE Gears Up for a Spectacular Second Comeback of Clash of Champions

Outside of WWE’s four or five major annual events, there is often a rotation in the pay-per-view lineup. Nearly ten years ago, Clash of Champions was revived and added to this rotation but disappeared again after a few years. Now, WWE seems interested in bringing it back once more.

On December 1st, WWE filed a trademark related to Clash of Champions, primarily focusing on merchandise. While the trademark only covers products, it strongly hints at a potential revival of the event in the near future.

Clash of Champions has a long and varied history, starting in 1988 with the NWA where it functioned similarly to WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, held intermittently instead of annually. This tradition continued with WCW until Clash of Champions was discontinued to make room for the second weekly show, Thunder. WWE acquired the rights to the name from WCW in 2001 but didn’t use it for many years.

In 2016, WWE revived Clash of Champions as an annual event after overcoming the legacy of the Monday Night War and began using WCW and ECW show names again. Between its revival and its second retirement in 2020, the event was held four times before WWE once again shelved it.

Currently, with the recent trademark filing, WWE looks poised to bring Clash of Champions back. Traditionally, the event features matches where champions face each other or all titles are defended, much like the Night of Champions event it replaced. If revived, these concepts could help the show stand out.

Fan Take: The potential return of Clash of Champions excites WWE fans as it promises high-stakes matches involving all champions, making every title defense crucial. This revival could reinvigorate WWE’s event lineup, adding fresh excitement and prestige to the championship scene.
