New Japan Pro Wrestling has revealed the latest update regarding Konosuke Takeshita’s status following the upcoming Wrestle Kingdom 20 event. Takeshita is set to defend his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Yota Tsuji in a Winner Takes All match on January 4th. Regardless of the match outcome, Takeshita will compete again on January 5th at the New Year’s Dash event, where his position within the promotion will be on the line.

The details of New Year’s Dash matches usually remain a secret, but NJPW has confirmed several participants, including Takeshita, Tsuji, Aaron Wolf, and Andrade El Idolo, who will join the United Empire faction. Other confirmed wrestlers include Boltin Oleg, Shota Umino, Yuya Uemura, Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI, Tomohiro Ishii, Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr., and many more. NJPW states that the full event card will largely depend on Wrestle Kingdom 20’s outcomes.

Takeshita has also responded to criticism he received for not joining a trip while holding the IWGP World Heavyweight title.

Fan Take: This update is huge for AEW fans because it keeps Takeshita, who has AEW ties, prominently positioned within NJPW, hinting at potential cross-promotional opportunities. It also signals high-stakes storytelling that can elevate the sport and generate buzz for international wrestling fans.
