Rising NJPW Sensation Yota Tsuji Shares Insider Scoop on AEW Backstage Buzz

2 Min Read

In just two days, the paths of IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji and AEW star Konosuke Takeshita, who also holds the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, will intersect in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all showdown at Tokyo Dome, Japan’s premier wrestling venue. Prior to their Wrestle Kingdom 20 match, Tsuji openly shared his critical thoughts on New Japan Pro Wrestling’s partnership with AEW, sparking debate about whether his comments reflect his genuine views or are merely part of his persona.

During an interview with New Japan Pro Wrestling, Tsuji emphasized his dedication to NJPW and expressed doubts about how a collaboration with AEW would benefit a rising star like himself. This intense match was seen by many as symbolizing a NJPW versus AEW rivalry, and although some suspected Tsuji’s remarks to be scripted as part of the storyline, a New Japan official confirmed to Fightful Select that his words were authentic. Despite having some previous collaborations, Tsuji has been openly critical about the AEW partnership, particularly when involved in U.S.-based cross-promotional events.

Fightful reports that Tsuji was once considered as a contender for the AEW World Championship against ex-champion Swerve Strickland at the 2024 Forbidden Door event, but the spot eventually went to former NJPW talent and current AEW star Will Ospreay. Currently, Tsuji has held the Global Heavyweight Championship for 81 days, winning it from Gabe Kidd at the King of Pro Wrestling event in October. Takeshita, meanwhile, earned the World Heavyweight Championship at the same event. This Wrestle Kingdom will mark their first reigns with their respective titles, with the event airing live on New Japan Pro Wrestling World this Sunday.
