The Miz Opens Up About His Challenging Beginnings in WWE

3 Min Read

The Miz gradually evolved into a prominent star and valuable crossover figure within WWE, but his entry into the company was unusual. Initially, he appeared as a contestant on WWE’s reality competition show, Tough Enough, though he revealed in a recent interview that he wasn’t even allowed to audition at first. In an interview on “INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet,” Miz explained that when he wanted to try out for the show’s second season, MTV — which aired both Tough Enough and another reality series Real World Challenge — declined because mixing contestants between shows wasn’t allowed, fearing it would confuse viewers. As a result, Miz stayed at UPW in Los Angeles to continue honing his wrestling skills. He also admitted he hesitated about participating in Tough Enough, worried it might cause people to see him as just seeking brief fame rather than a serious wrestler. Despite that, he acknowledged he did want his moment in the spotlight but also sought respect within WWE.

Eventually, Miz got his chance through Tough Enough after WWE personally reached out to invite him to a tryout for a massive 50-person show. Still anxious about how he’d be perceived, he contacted the experienced WWE wrestler Simon Dean, expressing concern about being labeled a “Tough Enough guy,” which had a stigma attached back then. Miz pointed out that many Tough Enough contestants had been disrespected and pushed out of WWE’s locker room. Dean reminded him the opportunity could lead to a $1 million prize and was a significant chance since his other attempts to break into WWE hadn’t worked. Reflecting on his first Tough Enough day, Miz recalled enduring harsh tests, including receiving roughly 500 shocks during challenges and the intensity of competition, where some contestants dropped out early. Despite the hardships, they had to demonstrate genuine commitment to earn their place in the competition.
