Triple H Reflects on WWE’s Future Following AJ Styles’ Retirement at Royal Rumble

3 Min Read

AJ Styles’ illustrious WWE in-ring career may have officially concluded at Royal Rumble: Riyadh, but his journey with WWE could be far from over behind the scenes. Following the event, Triple H was asked about the possibility of Styles continuing with WWE in a non-wrestling role after his emotional defeat to Gunther. His answer was telling.

“We’ve had many discussions, especially since everything happened,” Triple H shared. “While we anticipated his retirement coming later this year, it’s been a frequent topic. AJ is definitely one of those guys who wants to give back and remain involved in this business.”

Although Triple H acknowledged he couldn’t speak entirely on Styles’ behalf, he emphasized that Styles has made it clear the in-ring competition is done for now. “From my conversations with him, he was very straightforward that the wrestling chapter is closed. There comes a time when you recognize it’s time to move on.”

That said, WWE’s involvement with Styles isn’t over. Triple H suggested that Styles could follow a path similar to Shawn Michaels, taking on roles such as coaching, mentoring, and producing. “I hope he continues contributing because he’s one of the sharpest minds in wrestling. Looking at what Shawn Michaels is doing with NXT, that’s the kind of post-wrestling career I envision for AJ.”

These remarks followed Styles’ retirement bout against Gunther, a grueling match where Styles eventually passed out in a sleeper hold, prompting the referee to end the fight. Fans at Riyadh playfully teased him for leaving behind his gloves, but when he kept them on, the crowd erupted in cheers of “Thank you, AJ.”

Despite all this, speculation about Styles’ future remains alive. He recently filed a trademark for his ring name and logo, fueling rumors that he might explore opportunities outside WWE, potentially overseas. However, if Triple H’s vision prevails, the next phase for The Phenomenal One will still be within WWE, albeit outside the ring.
