Following WWE’s acquisition of the Mexican wrestling organization AAA, speculation has arisen about Alberto Del Rio’s potential return to WWE. Although there are no current signs pointing in that direction, Iguana is exploring the possibility of Del Rio rejoining WWE.
In a discussion with Bill Apter, Iguana was asked about the chances of fans influencing Alberto Del Rio’s return, especially in light of the strengthened collaboration between AAA and WWE.
Iguana expressed uncertainty about the matter, recalling Del Rio’s previous time in WWE and his matches against John Cena and Randy Orton.
As for Del Rio’s current status, Iguana noted that he is receiving enthusiastic responses from audiences in Mexico, particularly with AAA. Initially a prominent heel, Del Rio is now being embraced as a babyface, garnering cheers from the crowd.
He explained that this unpredictability is part of the charm of Lucha Libre, where crowd reactions can shift, and promoters often take notice when a wrestler makes a strong impression. A fan’s affection can fluctuate, leading to unexpected turns in a wrestler’s status.
“I really don’t know. He was in WWE before—I remember wrestling with John Cena, and he faced Randy Orton. He was a heel, but now the crowd is cheering for him; he’s turning into a big babyface.”
“Yes, that’s the magic of Lucha—it’s unpredictable and the crowd dictates what they want. One day they’re fans of one wrestler, and the next, it’s someone else—they can quickly switch their loyalty. Promoters need to recognize when a wrestler is making a significant impact.”
WWE has no immediate plans to bring Alberto Del Rio back, and this stance is reportedly consistent across all departments within the organization. As it stands, Del Rio hasn’t been contacted and is not included in WWE’s future creative projects. Fans may need to accept the prospect of Del Rio not returning, especially since even Iguana is unsure of what lies ahead.
