Sting Opens Up: Wanted to Quit Music Career as an “Old Man’s Stab Wound”

WWE Hall of Famer Sting officially retired from professional wrestling at the 2024 AEW Revolution, but in a recent interview, he revealed that his original plan for retirement was somewhat different. Sting shared that he had initially intended his final match to be as an “old man’s stab wound,” highlighting a persona featuring his natural gray hair and whiskers. During a conversation on the Main Figure podcast, Sting addressed fans who were eager for one more match, explaining that while many requested an additional bout, he felt satisfied retiring at 66.

Sting’s last AEW run was memorable, as he partnered with his protégé, Darby Allin, maintaining an undefeated streak of 28-0 in tag team matches. He retired as one half of the AEW World Tag Team Champions after defeating the Young Bucks at the 2024 Revolution event. Earlier that year, Sting also submitted a trademark for the name “Old Man Sting” and made convention appearances in full face paint and attire.

Even though Sting is retired, elements of his final match storyline are still impacting AEW. Darby Allin made a dramatic comeback by rappelling from the stadium roof during the All In Texas main event recently, while the Young Bucks, who lost to Sting and Allin, played a significant role in AEW as executive vice presidents on screen.

Fan Take: Sting’s retirement marks the end of an era but also cements his legacy within AEW, inspiring both fans and wrestlers alike. His final storyline and the involvement of key AEW stars signal exciting opportunities for fresh rivalries and growth in the sport moving forward.
