Zila Fatu Opens Up on Father Umaga’s Reasons for Rejecting Him as a Wrestler

Zilla Fatu feels a growing connection to his late father following his debut in professional wrestling.

The 25-year-old wrestler recently sat down for an interview with Chris Van Vriette, discussing his experiences working with Booker T in the Reality of Wrestling promotions, along with Shelton Benjamin, who serves as a father figure to him.

Starting his wrestling career in 2023 on the independent circuit, Zilla was asked about following in the footsteps of his father, Umaga. He shared that his father always encouraged his children to explore other paths before committing to wrestling professionally.

“My dad used to say every Thursday during family meetings, ‘I don’t want you guys to do this. I want you to be better than me. I don’t want you to go through the struggles that I have,'” Zilla recalled.

Although Zilla admits he didn’t fully grasp his father’s advice when he was younger, he now understands it more deeply as he navigates the wrestling business himself. He feels that starting his wrestling career has brought him closer to his father, giving him insight into the challenges Umaga faced.

“And at the time, I really didn’t understand that. But now, being in the business, I definitely get it. There are many things the public and media don’t see, and accepting that helps you move forward. I’m glad I chose wrestling because it’s brought me closer to my dad. Through wrestling, I’m getting to know who he really was. I’m so happy I started this journey,” Zilla shared.

Umaga, a notable second-generation wrestler, rose to prominence in WWE between 2005 and 2009. During his career, he became a two-time Intercontinental Champion and competed against stars like John Cena, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels. Sadly, he passed away in December 2009 at just 36 years old due to a heart attack.
