In the latest episode of AEW Close-Up, Colt Cabana shared with Renee Paquette the mixed feelings he experiences working as a backstage producer for All Elite Wrestling. While his love for performing remains strong, Cabana revealed that his current role lets him leverage his many years of wrestling experience and stay deeply involved in the action.
"I love it. I love it. It’s a little bittersweet because the performer in me always wants to be in the ring," Cabana confessed.
Despite this inner struggle, the former ROH star emphasized that producing is where he truly wants to be, helping shape the storytelling of the matches.
"But as a producer, I’m on set, and I enjoy being there," Kavanagh said. He also expressed confidence in his vast wrestling knowledge, stating, "I’ve been passionate about wrestling for years and still am. I enjoy putting that knowledge to work."
Having been with AEW for over five years, Cabana finds great fulfillment working closely with the production team during events.
"Different producers have their preferences, but I really enjoy communicating with the production team, right in the heat of the match. It feels like there are three key people involved—a wrestler and a referee—but I like to think of myself as the fourth person. It’s a lot of fun, and I’m loving it," he added.
At 45, the seasoned wrestler admits his active in-ring career is nearing its end, though he continues to wrestle on the independent scene. His passion for entertaining in any form—whether it’s wrestling, comedy, podcasting, or production—remains strong.
Fan Take: This insight into Colt Cabana’s evolution shows AEW’s depth beyond just in-ring talent, highlighting how experienced performers can enrich storytelling behind the scenes. For fans, it signals a commitment to quality production that elevates the entire viewing experience and helps grow the sport’s future.
