WWE Struggles to Establish a Successful Women’s Tag Team Division

Former WWE talent Kayden Carter, now known as Lacey Lane in AEW/ROH, and Katana Chance, also known as Casey Catanzaro, made history as the first tag team to hold both the WWE and NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships. Despite their accomplishments, Lane recently revealed to Dennis Salcedo in an interview that they felt undervalued and not genuinely supported by WWE.

Lane shared that both she and Catanzaro experienced feelings of being set up to fail during their time in WWE. She recounted a moment backstage at SmackDown when Catanzaro was in tears due to their struggles, despite their best efforts. Although they won the WWE Tag Team Titles in 2023, WWE struggled to find a proper role for them. Lane stated, “We were trying our best to do everything, but it felt like we were just set up to fail. That was the hardest part.” They often had to maximize very limited ring time to prove themselves.

Both Lane and Catanzaro aspired to be the best tag team in WWE, not just a pairing of convenience. They aimed to change the perception of tag team wrestling among fans. Lane emphasized, “We’ve fought so hard to be this good a tag team… We just wanted to be one of the teams and worked hard.” Despite their dedication, their WWE journey was fraught with frustration. After debuting on the main SmackDown roster in 2023, both were released in May 2025. Lane has continued her wrestling career, recently challenging for the TBS title in AEW.

It also underscores the potential for these women to thrive and redefine women’s tag team wrestling outside WWE, bringing new excitement to the sport.
