Dwayne Johnson Drops Disheartening News on Disney’s ‘Jungle Cruise’ Sequel

It appears that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is unlikely to return for another Jungle Cruise adventure. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson and his co-star Emily Blunt shared some disappointing news about the prospects of a sequel to the 2021 movie.

Although Jungle Cruise earned $220 million at the box office despite releasing shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic peak, it was still viewed as a financial letdown given its hefty $200 million budget. Due to the film’s underwhelming financial results and shifts in company leadership, both Johnson and Blunt are skeptical about a follow-up film happening.

When asked about a sequel on EW’s podcast The Awardist, Johnson was straightforward: “I don’t think so.” He explained that with Disney’s new leadership and the post-COVID business landscape, the studio seemed reluctant to revisit the project. Johnson noted, “They thought, ‘We’ve done it once, but I’m not sure we should do it again,'” regardless of the actors’ chemistry. Blunt added that Disney simply didn’t want to “set sail again,” but she accepted the decision.

While their Jungle Cruise journey may be over, Johnson and Blunt remain creative collaborators. They are set to reunite for Martin Scorsese’s upcoming untitled drama, which Blunt calls “the last great American crowd story.” Meanwhile, Johnson stays busy filming Jumanji 3 and working on another project with Benny Safdie titled Lizard Music.

Fan Take: For WWE fans, this news highlights The Rock’s evolving career beyond wrestling, showing his shift towards high-profile film projects rather than franchise sequels. While it may mean fewer appearances connected to his wrestling persona, it could also signal greater opportunities for WWE as The Rock’s Hollywood success continues to bring mainstream attention to the sport.
