WWE’s Paul Heyman Opens Up About His Teenage Encounter with Vince McMahon Sr.

2 Min Read

Paul Heyman, widely recognized today as WWE’s on-screen manager, has been part of the wrestling world since he was 13, working in various capacities over six decades. On the show “What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon,” Heyman shared the story of how he first met Vince McMahon Sr., Steph McMahon’s grandfather. At 14, in 1980, Heyman found out that McMahon, the head of Capitol Wrestling Corporation, was at a New York City steakhouse. Trying to get a press pass for a WWF event at Madison Square Garden, Heyman contacted the Capitol Hill office and eventually persuaded McMahon over the phone by pretending they had met at the steakhouse, which led to McMahon directing him where to pick up the pass.

Heyman received the pass without any trouble and kept a low profile at the event since he was still in high school. He recalled entering the locker room where Vince McMahon Sr. was talking with André the Giant and captured some memorable photos. After developing the pictures and confirming their quality, Heyman brought them to a subsequent event, but security initially prevented him from delivering them to McMahon. Thankfully, ring announcer Howard Finkel intervened and escorted Heyman to McMahon, who was impressed by the photos and paid Heyman $50. McMahon encouraged him to continue attending MSG events and taking pictures, marking the beginning of Heyman’s extensive career with the company that evolved into WWE.

Fan Take: This glimpse into Paul Heyman’s early connection with the McMahon family highlights the deep-rooted passion and determination that helped shape WWE’s legacy. For fans, it underscores how the sport’s history is built on personal relationships and genuine dedication, hinting at the importance of nurturing talent both in and out of the ring.
