John Cena Reveals the Reasons Behind Choosing a Venue Other Than Boston for His Final WWE Match

John Cena’s final WWE match is scheduled for the Saturday Night Main Event on December 13th at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Despite many fans wishing it would be closer to his hometown of West Newbury, Massachusetts, near Boston, Cena clarified in an interview with Bill Simmons at The Ringer that he has no say in the location. He emphasized that these decisions depend on logistical factors, arena availability, and WWE’s overall schedule, not the preferences of the wrestler.

Cena explained, “That’s way beyond my control. I don’t book the live event calendar. If it were up to me, every game would be in Tampa. The mistake is I didn’t have 36 games in Tampa.” He further noted that fans often don’t grasp the complexity of scheduling events, saying, “You never know if [TD Garden] was available or not. It’s, ‘Hey, this would be perfect.’ You don’t know the route, you don’t know the live event hurdles you have to go through.”

Additionally, Cena highlighted that having a retirement tour across multiple cities allows him to experience various “last” moments before retiring completely. He remarked, “That way, you get a lot of ‘last matches’: the last Smackdown in Chicago where I started, the last round at TD, the last round at MSG, the last Raw, the last premium live event or pay-per-view in San Diego, and of course the last match.”

Though Boston won’t host his farewell match, Cena cherished the emotional experience of returning to TD Garden earlier this fall. “Trust me, it was really nice to get back out there one last time,” he said. Cena’s final match is expected to be a significant career milestone, and while it may not be in his hometown, his farewell tour has already given WWE fans numerous memorable moments.
