In a different scenario, AEW’s Kyle Fletcher might have become a rising star in WWE, as reports revealed that WWE showed interest in signing him and his Australian Open tag partner, Mark Davis, before they joined AEW in 2023. On the show “Insight with Chris Van Vliet,” Fletcher admitted that he was genuinely interested in WWE. He described the choice between WWE and AEW as a close call but mentioned that discussions with WWE didn’t advance very far.
“We had a Zoom meeting where we discussed the contract and other details,” Fletcher explained. “When it came to that stage, we felt it wasn’t the right fit, so we didn’t pursue it further. We had options, but AEW was clearly the better fit for us at that time.”
Fletcher highlighted that his and Davis’s previous work with AEW through the promotion’s collaboration with New Japan gave them a chance to see the inner workings of AEW firsthand. They both appreciated what they experienced.
“We were fortunate to work there a few times as part of New Japan’s involvement,” Fletcher said. “The environment was… I wouldn’t say total freedom, but there was definitely a lot of trust. I was able to create and wrestle the way I wanted. Experiencing that beforehand is what attracted me to AEW.”
Fan Take: This insight into Fletcher and Davis’s decision-making sheds light on AEW’s appeal for wrestlers seeking creative freedom and trust. For AEW fans, it reinforces the promotion’s commitment to empowering talent, which could continue to enhance the quality and authenticity of the sport.
