According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, after Sting officially joined WWE, the company still declined to book a match between Sting and The Undertaker in 2014. Meltzer explained that Vince McMahon never viewed Sting as being on the same level as The Undertaker, and this personal perspective essentially killed any chance of the dream match happening.
Meltzer shared, “That was Vince’s decision. Looking back, the answer was no because Vince didn’t recognize Sting’s potential the way many others did. He could have made it happen, and many fans wanted it, but Vince didn’t see Sting as equal to The Undertaker, so he didn’t pursue it.”
He further added that the scenario might have unfolded differently if someone else had been running the company. “If another person was in charge, it could have been possible. But with Vince at the helm, no. Vince didn’t truly understand Sting, and the idea of Sting versus The Undertaker just wasn’t meant for WWE’s audience in his eyes. That was his mindset, even if it was wrong.”
So, the greatest dream match that WWE never booked was never seriously considered because Vince McMahon doubted Sting’s appeal to his audience. Despite Sting’s legendary status in WCW and wrestling history, that respect was not mirrored under Vince’s leadership.
This left fans wondering what could have been, but based on Meltzer’s insights, they never really came close.
