Tommaso Ciampa’s New Journey Unveiled Following His WWE Exit

Tommaso Ciampa may have recently parted ways with WWE, but his next career move could be just as significant—and it may not involve AEW. According to the January 23, 2026 issue of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer disclosed that Ciampa is reportedly exploring the possibility of joining New Japan Pro Wrestling. Meltzer noted, “There’s talk that he’s trying to break into New Japan.”

While Ciampa’s intense in-ring style would suit AEW well, Meltzer explained why he might not immediately debut there. He pointed out that Ciampa pursuing independent bookings suggests he doesn’t have an existing AEW contract. Meltzer commented, “I think he’s a great fit for AEW stylistically, but AEW has such a large roster filled with top-tier talent that it’s hard to break through. The fact that he’s pushing for indie bookings would seem to indicate that he’s not leaving AEW for a contract, but given that Tony Khan signs so many guys and he’s a strong wrestler inside the ring, I wouldn’t be surprised if such a deal happens.”

The independent circuit appears to be a strong focus for Ciampa right now. On January 21, he announced via Instagram that his WWE contract was about to expire and that for the first time in over a decade, he was open to external appearances, including autograph signings, photoshoots, seminars, movies, TV roles, fitness collaborations, and sponsorships. Ciampa stated, “That being said, for the first time in over 10 years, I am able to participate in all appearances, autographs, photo shoots, seminars, movies, TV appearances, fitness collaborations, sponsorships, etc.”

In addition, Ciampa is taking control of his post-WWE persona. Trademark filings reveal he has applied for trademarks for “Psycho Killer” and “Psycho King,” reflecting his early indie nickname and its evolution into a more polished character aimed at a global audience. Fans will recall “Psycho Killer” from Ciampa’s indie wrestling days, often accompanied by intense stares and eerie riffs from Talking Heads. The “Psycho King” seems to mark a new phase for the persona, crafted for a broader international appeal.

With his sights set beyond WWE and a newfound creative freedom, Ciampa seems poised to redefine himself in a way few wrestlers get to. No longer the “Blackheart of NXT,” whether he wrestles in Tokyo, Jacksonville, or across the independent scene worldwide, he is carving out his own legacy.

Fan Take: This development is exciting for WWE fans because Ciampa’s potential move to New Japan or the indies highlights the growing opportunities outside WWE’s umbrella, showcasing the global reach of wrestling talent. It also underscores how wrestlers today can reinvent themselves and build fresh legacies, keeping the sport dynamic and unpredictable.
