AAA’s internal reaction to WWE’s acquisition revealed

3 Min Read

WWE was just shocked at WrestleMania 41 weekend and officially announced the acquisition of Mexico’s Lucha Libre Giant AAA, but the talent within the AAA was just as shocked as everyone else.

According to Sean Ross Sapp, who spoke about the contract on the Postrestlemania show, several AAA wrestlers had heard whispers for months, but most AAA wrestlers didn’t think WWE would actually pull the trigger. “I talked to AAA talent and they said, ‘Well, I’ve heard of it for a while.’ ” Sapp said. “They said, ‘But I didn’t think it was real. I didn’t think it would really happen.’

Sapp added that once the TKO merger is finally complete, the story of WWE involved has regained steam. “They said they’ve really started picking up things like that since the TKO merger, but that was a rumour.”

The question is whether WWE actually owns the company entirely or does it hold a part of it? Sapp asked, saying he spoke to three AAA wrestlers shortly after the news broke. Their response was the same: “They thought they would be shocked if total control was abandoned.”

So, while the documents say WWE owns the AAA, many within Lucha’s promotions are not convinced that the Roldan family is still really on the sidelines.

As rumors swirl, one name continues to pop up – Alberto del Rio. WWE previously maintained a tough “no” to get back the controversial former champion, but that tone has reportedly changed. “It’s no longer a controversy.” According to one source, he added that there was a real discussion.

NXT Worlds Collide is set for June 7th at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, and will showcase AAA talent under the WWE banner. It remains to be seen whether this will reconstruct Lucha’s scene or act as WWE’s next global expansion project.
