NFL legend and former WCW star Steve “Mango” McMichael passed away at the age of 67 after a fierce battle with ALS. Fox 32 Sports confirmed that McMichael passed away Wednesday just hours after it was announced that he had joined Hospice Care.
Ric Flair, McMichael’s closest friend and one of the four jockey members, shared a heartfelt message on Twitter/X. “The world has lost the incredible Steve ‘Mango’ McMichael! He was my best friend through it! Amazing athletes and people! I have the most favourite memories of working with him.
McMichael’s legacy goes far beyond the wrestling ring. The dominant defensive lineman was a key figure on the 1985 Chicago Bears team, winning the Super Bowl and becoming one of the most iconic defensives in NFL history. In 2024 he was finally introduced Pro Football Hall of Fame– The moment he celebrated at home, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mango made his debut in the world of wrestling WrestleMania 11 He is standing by Laurence Taylor in 1995. He later moved to WCW, first as an announcer and then as a full-time wrestler. In 1996 he joined Four jockeysworking with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Chris Benoit to bring his hard-hitting football mentality to the square.
McMichael’s fight with ALS began in 2021 and despite physical sacrifices he remained surrounded by support from fans, former teammates and wrestling peers.
